Os Centros de Controlo Z-Wave (Controladores) sem fios são o coração e o centro de uma rede Z-Wave. É possível configurar e operar uma rede Z-Wave com um controlo remoto Z-Wave, contudo certas funções tais comopor exemplo, desencadear acções a determinadas horas ou a partir de eventos só podem ser conseguidas com um Controlador Z-Wave sem fios ou um PC com uma aplicação automação residencial, Home automation Software. Os controladores estão permanenemente online, mas apenas necessitam  de um valor residual de energia para o seu funcionamento. Eles são controlados por botões locais ou através de um Explorador Internet (Web Browser) via Ethernet. A interface web permite também um acesso remoto via um smartphone Andróid ou I-Phone.
